From Page to Screen: Star Wars Episode VII by Jerry Whitworth
Recently, Disney has acquired Lucasfilm and announced plans to have a Star Wars: Episode VII in theaters in 2015. Details of the film have yet to surface however if the prequels are any indication it will be based on preexisting canon and its title alludes to taking place after the original trilogy. Further, as the original trilogy told the journey of Luke Skywalker and the prequels of his father Anakin, it’s also likely the next film (or series of films) will focus on the journey of the next generation of Skywalker. Luke Skywalker’s son Ben was born during the Yuuzhan Vong War where the children of Leia Organa and Han Solo became heroes only to lead to another of the Skywalker bloodline to fall to the Dark Side of the Force. With this in mind, lets explore this generation.
Daughter of Han Solo and Leia Organa, twin sister of Jacen Solo, and elder sibling of Anakin Solo, Jaina Solo was an integral character in the Yuuzhan Vong conflict earning the title of the Sword of the Jedi by her uncle Luke Skywalker. Hunted relentlessly by the New Republic and Sith, the Solo children were often without their parents who continued to try and bring peace back to the galaxy. Their childhood was spent being moved from planet to planet to ensure their safety and to prevent them from being brainwashed into practitioners of the Dark Side of the Force (as children are significantly more susceptible to its effect). Between being twins and their inherent aptitude with the Force, Jaina and Jacen shared a mental bond where they were common to finish each other’s sentences. Jaina largely took after her father, becoming handy at fixing and piloting space vessels. At age thirteen, she would attend her uncle Luke’s Jedi Praxeum beside her twin and Chewbacca’s nephew Lowbacca. The three along with fellow Initiates princess Tenel Ka of Hapan and Raynar Thul would become lifelong friends. It was when Jaina was sixteen that the conflict with the Yuuzhan Vong began during which time she befriended the prince of Artorias Finn Galfridian and was inducted into the famous X-Wing unit Rogue Squadron earning the nickname “Sticks” with Anni Capstan as her wingman (and friend). During the course of the war, Jaina met rival Chiss pilot Jagged Fel who would develop a longstanding on-again/off-again romantic relationship before finally getting married. During the course of the war, Jaina would be knighted earning the title of the Sword of the Jedi while the Yuuzhan Vong dubbed her the avatar of the Trickster Goddess Yun-Harla. Jaina would command the Twin Suns Squadron of elite starfighters formed by Luke taking on Jagged as her second-in-command.
Where Jaina took after her father, Jacen took after his grandfather Anakin Skywalker in his adeptness at the Force becoming his uncle Luke’s Padawan (along with his younger brother Anakin). Having difficulty coming to terms with using violence to create peace, the Yuuzhan Vong forced him into war for the sake of his friends and family. In order to end the conflict, Anakin led his siblings in a strike force against the Yuuzhan Vong worldship Baanu Rass in Myrkr’s orbit which resulted in Jacen taking over the mission when Anakin died. The Yuuzhan Vong would capture Jacen and hold him prisoner for nearly a year, slowly torturing him and precipitating a turn to the Dark Side. After escaping, Jacen would take part in the final battle against the Yuuzhan Vong and slew the enemy force’s leader, effectively ending the war. Following this, Jacen would secretly conceive a daughter named Allana Djo Solo with Tenel Ka (who had become Queen Mother of Hapan), take on his nephew Ben Skywalker as his Padawan, and became the Sith apprentice of Lumiya in order to prevent a future where he would kill Luke and see the galaxy descend into chaos. Jacen would seize control of the Galactic Alliance, kill his aunt Mara Jade Skywalker, torture Ben, take on Tahiri Veila as his apprentice, and become Sith Master Darth Caedus. In the end, Jaina was forced to kill her own twin brother.
Son of Luke Skywalker and former Emperor’s Hand and smuggler Mara Jade Skywalker, Ben Skywalker was born during the Yuuzhan Vong War. In a strange twist of fate, Ben’s parents were involved heavily in the war effort forcing Ben to largely be raised by his aunt and uncle Leia Organa and Han Solo (a couple largely absent in the lives of their own three children). Young Ben was so adept at the Force despite his age that the ongoing conflict caused him great pain leading him to try and close himself off to feeling the Force. When the galaxy was again brought into war with the Killik, Ben became Padawan to his cousin Jacen Solo. After some five years under his guidance, Ben became a strong Jedi Knight and joined Jacen’s Galactic Alliance Guard which was a secret police that combated terrorism. Unbeknownst to many, Jacen had turned to the Dark Side and slew Ben’s mother leading the former master and apprentice to become arch-enemies. Ben would prove Jacen to be his mother’s murderer which led to a duel between Jacen and his twin sister Jaina resulting in the death of the former.
One of the few alien species to originate from outside the known galaxy, the Yuuzhan Vong are a barbaric polytheistic race that abhors most technology but are obsessed with genetic engineering. Quite sadomasochistic, the Yuuzhan Vong can not be sensed by the Force and are on a holy crusade to exterminate mechanical technology wiping out and enslaving races towards this end. The Chiss Expansionary Defense Force would come into conflict with a small Yuuzhan Vong force following the Clone Wars leading to various scouts of the Yuuzhan Vong to emerge in the galaxy. Yuuzhan Vong executor Nom Anor would help generate war between Rhommamool and its neighboring planet Osarian as a smokescreen for the advance fleet to come unnoticed into the galaxy destroying the planet Helska IV (resulting in the death of millions including Han Solo’s closest friend the Wookiee Chewbacca). The Yuuzhan Vong War may have been the most devastating conflict in the galaxy’s history resulting in the estimated deaths of 365 trillion sentient lives.
