We have the worst movies ever so why don't we talk about some movies that we actually like?

My favorite director is Alfred Hitchcock so 5 of my favorite movies are directed by him:

1. Notorious
2. To Catch a Thief
3. Psycho
4. Rear Window
5. Shadow of a Doubt

The main reason I am such a huge Hitchcock fan is the fact that he could generate so much suspense and drama under such a restrictive system that Hollywood had at the time he was directing. The actors he used were all the best of the era and the performances he was able to achieve from them were always outstanding.
I think the one performance that stands out in my mind was Joseph Cotten playing Uncle Charlie in Shadow of a Doubt. He is so sinister and creepy that it always give me chills when I watch it.

Cheers,
Jeff

I really like Hitchcock, too. His Alfred Hitchcock Presents tv series was really good as well as his movies. I agree with your list, and I also liked The Man Who Knew Too Much.

One of my all-time favorite movies, I'd have to say is 12 Angry Men. It's one of those movies that you can watch again and again and it's still engaging. It's a really well-written character study that has a timeless quality about it.

I agree 12 Angry Men is excellent; Henry Fonda gave a Tour de Force performance. He is one of my favorite actors of all time. My favorite Henry Fonda film is performance in Hitchcock's The Wrong Man.

Jeff

I'm in the middle of watching this one for about the 10th time. It's great to see Bergman's facial expressions. She's amazing.

Here are a couple of films you might want to check out if you're a Hitchcock fan. He didn't have anything to do with either of these movies, but they're very much in his style.

3:10 To Yuma(original 1957 film) starring Van Heflin and Glenn Ford. If Alfred Hitchcock had ever made a western 3:10 to Yuma would have been it. Glenn Ford is execellent in a rare villain turn and Van Heflin(probably best remembered for Shane) does an excellent job playing the desperate farmer faced with the increasingly complicated moral dilemma of whether to keep his word and turn the bandit over to authorities or accept his very tempting financial offer. A great character study that builds an insane amount of suspense. You can get it really cheaply on DVD and it's certainly worth a look.

Charade(1963) A very clever little murder mystery much in the Hitchcock style with lots of plot twists, snappy dialogue, tounge-in-cheek humor, and of course plenty of dead bodies. One of Cary Grant's last(and in my opinion, best) films, also starring Audrey Hepburn, James Coburn, George Kennedy and Walter Matthau. Also available on DVD.

If you like Hitchcock and haven't already seen them these are certainly worth your while!

I have seen them both :D

Charade is my favorite of the two as i have that one on DVD. James Coburn and George Kennedy play great villains in Charade. The word play between Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant is beautiful because it is so witty and you can tell they are enjoying themselves throughout the film.

Jeff

Another great one is North by Northwest, anytime Hitchcock and Cary Grant get together I enjoy it. Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, Martin Landau and Jessie Royce Landis all have great performances.
The scene on Mount Rushmore is one of my all-time favourites considering they had no cg it's still really suspenseful.

Jeff

One of my favorite modern movies is Lucky # Slevin with Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Sir Ben Kingsley, Josh Harnett and Stanley Tucci. The twists and turns of the plot are great plus it keeps your attention from the start. The characters are all so original it's great to see a story where everyone's lives are so entwined. Plus it's as bloody as hell:twisted:

Some of my favorite films: BATMAN-directed by Tim Burton. I couldn't wait to see it as a kid when it came out (I was 13). I couldn't wait to get home and draw Batman and the Joker after seeing it. I can still quote it. "Ever dance with the devil in the pale moon light?" Then, there was the music (and by music I mean Danny Elfman's score). I still imagine myself driving the Batmobile down a spooky looking road on the way to the Batcave with the music in my head from that scene from time to time.

Braveheart. I still tear up at the end every time. It's a masterpeice by Mel Gibson. I have seen it maybe 30 times. I still spot actors from this film and go "Look it's Robert the Bruce!!" or something like that. It's a great story and the fight scenes are awesome.

 Okay, one more before you guys comment. {By the way, thanks for the postcard Terry.} Top Gun.-I loved this movie as a kid and still can't get enough of it. I love the soundtrack (Highway to the Danger Zone, anybody???) and thought that being a Naval avaitor must be the coolest job in the world. I tear up everytime Goose dies, I still feel the need...the need for speed, I've been known to sing "Great Balls of Fire" when I hear the tune, and I hate it when "she's lost that lovin' feelin'."

To leviathan15: You need an avatar. Pick out one that's cool to you. Terry has Simpson avatar's on here but you can find all kinds if you know where to look. DC has some, Marvel does if you know where to look and Batman Yesterday, Today and Beyond has some as well. Happy Hunting!! And I also love most Tim Burton movies. Not so sure about this new one that comes out on Christmas day.

Yes, it's based off the Steven Sondheim musical Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street which in turn is somewhat based off some older stories. I believe the movie will be a musical as well.

I might also note that from what I read, there'll be no dubbing of the musical numbers. Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter et al are actually going to sing.

I watched another of my favorite movies the other night From the Terrace with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. That's the great thing about having a dvr you can program it to look for whatever you enjoy. I have an needless supply of classic uncut movies to always watch and discover.

One of my favorite movies from my youth was/is The Goonies. I loved all the characters (Sloth, etc.) and the good sayings..."Hey You Guys!!", the pirate treasure of One-Eyed Willie and the bad guys were great too!! It's funny, it's an adventure and it's just fun. :)

To daredevil-art: A few months ago I saw Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and thought it was hilarious. I thought Steve Martin and John Candy's unique styles of humor complimented each other perfectly.
It's a shame they didn't form a comedy team. They probably could have been a modern day Abbott and Costello.

To Zenos:I've never seen The Goonies(although I did play a primitive arcade game based off of it when I was a kid. Not the same thing is it?), although it does make you wonder why they don't make more fun, enjoyable movies than they do. Every time they put out Pirates of the Carribean or National Treasure (for example) they make a fortune, yet the studios seem reluctant to make films that viewers would be gasp entertained by.

-J

Oh, by the way, MERRY CHRISTMAS everybody!
(Yes, we know it's the 28th, but better late than never, right?)

:D BTW, I'm happy that I found a good Sylar avatar to be my new one. Sylar is the villain on HEROES on NBC. What should replace anything on the top 10 list?? You guys don't like "League of Extraordinary Gentleman", so what should take it's place???

The League wasn't that bad; the only thing is you need to separate it from the comic version. If you want to see Alan Moore's version read the comic; if you want to see Sean Connery's family friendly version watch the movie.

Personally I don't like Alan Moore's take but I do like Kevin O'Neills art so it's a mixed bag for me.

Cheers,
Jeff

I notice there are no X-Men movies on your list. I haven't really seen them, just a little of the first one on cable, so I can't say whether they should be one there or not, I only mention it.

I also notice none of the Blade movies are on the list. The second one was pretty cool and the action scenes were pretty imaginative, although that's the only one I've seen more than a few minutes of.

Also I didn't see Daredevil or Elektra on your list...oh, wait, it says "best" movies. Never mind.

I wrote this at work and was stressed at the time....that's my only excuse for forgetting about X-Men and X-Men 2. Both were good movies and were well done. X-3 lacked the "soul" that the previous 2 did. It was obvious that Bryan Singer did not direct them.

Of all time... That's pretty tough, since I like so many movies. ;/

1. The Indiana Jones Trilogy
2. Star Wars 4-6
3. Poolhall Junkies
4. Batman Begins
5. Laurence of Arabia
6. Gladiator
7. 300
8. Memento

I'm definitely forgetting some, but there are seriously so many movies I love. I'll have to check my collection at home. ;P

This past weekend I watched 2 of my favorite films starring John Wayne and Paul Newman.

Tycoon with John Wayne, Lorraine Day and Anthony Quinn

The Young Philadelphians with Paul Newman, Barbara Rush, David Keith and a bit part by a very young Adam West.

Cheers,
Jeff

I knew both the movies by name only, so I researched them a little on IMDB(Internet Movie Database, but you probably already knew that), and thought they both sounded interesting. The Young Philadelphians certainly reads like a who's who of rising stars(at the time), and I've always liked John Wayne(talk about an actor who always managed to do a lot with often very little).

I just got through seeing the remake(more of a reimagining of the concept really) of The Italian Job this weekend, and I loved it!
It features a very clever plotline, lots of action, characters you like, plenty of humor, and a great ensamble cast. It reminded me a lot(in style anyway) of National Treasure. Definitely worth a look if you haven't seen it already.

Hmm, for some reason I can't think of many trilogy's :x But, it would probably be between The LOTR Trilogy and the Star Wars trilogy. Trilogy's for me have to be consistently good in ALL movies. Those, IMO, fit that bill.

I liked the Pirates of the Carribbean trilogy a lot. The Indiana Jones trilogy (soon to be a trilogy no longer) is also worth noting, although I thought the 1st and 3rd movies were superior to the 2nd.

There are great trilogies such as Back to the Future that were good. The STAR WARS prequels are good, but "Revenge of the Sith" is the best of them. Indiana Jones is now disqualified for this conversation. So here's my
TOP 3: 1. Lord of the Rings
2. STAR WARS IV-VI
3. The Matrix Trilogy

What do y'all think???

Greatest trilogies imo (not in any particular order, though LotR was definitely the best of the best):

1. Lord of the Rings
2. Star Wars IV-VI
3. Indiana Jones 1-3
4. Spider-Man 1-3
5. X-Men 1-3
6. Godfather
7. The matrix
8. The Prophecy
9. Pirates of the Caribbean
10. The Mummy (I love these movies & #3 is coming out this year, so I can't not think the next one will be fantastic... though, I AM a lover of Anthrpology/Archaeology, so this is right up my ally)

For me, Godfather 3 can't compare to the masterpieces that are the Godfather and Godfather II.

I discounted Indiana Jones because of the new movie coming out, which will make it a 4-pete or something like that.

Also...IMHO...X-Men 3 was not near as good as the first two. It was action-packed but seemed to lack the soul of the first two movies.

As to Pirates...I didn't like the second movie "Dead Man's Chest" as much as "At World's End." And in my opinion...the first is far better than the other two.
