Hello,

I've been working on some comic cover recreations recently and thought there might be some other board members who would like to take a look at them.

Amazing Spider-Man #300 cover recreation:

World War Hulk #1 cover recreation:

Tomb of Dracula #16 cover recreation painting:

Happy Hulking Birthday! (inking sample):

Batman vs. Killer Croc (inking sample):

Batman vs. Killer Croc (original Al Rio pencils):

Captain America vs. Wolverine (inking sample):

Any feedback or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Patrick

Neat stuff. But it seems like you should write "after McFarlane" (etc) on them to give the original artist some credit and to avoid confusion with the real thing.

IMHO of course!

Thanks and you're right. I have been doing that on the originals when sending them to the buyers, but I scanned them before writing the acknowledgments. I'll reverse the order next time.

That's a very interesting take on the Frazetta picture. Nice work!

I truly think you should be doing your own pencils.
Maybe in a similar fashion to other artists, sure, everybody has their influences and inspiration but (to me) your art is infringing upon the rights of the original artist a bit.

Show me a Catwoman head shot of your own creation. Not another version of a Bolland piece.

IMHO of course!

Terry,

Thanks for looking at my inking and for your comments. In response, I would have to say that before I took a 7-year hiatus from comics, my primary role in most of my comic endeavors was that of an inker. I actually inked this at no charge to the client, so it wasn't something that I did in order to generate a profit from Bolland's original sketch.

Unfortunately, inkers have been looked down upon by some people as "tracers" and are considered by some to be superfluous. I don't agree with this assessment, and there are quite a few others - such as Tom Palmer, Joe Rubinstein, Terry Austin, etc. - who contribute something of their own to enhance the work that they ink. Of course, there was the controversy back in the '60's when Vince Colletta inked Jack Kirby's Thor work and how he removed characters from scenes and made other alterations, so it goes the other way as well.

All that someone needs to do is look at "The Art of Comic Book Inking" to see how different inkers superimpose something of their own style on a penciler's work to appreciate the contribution they make. When I was a kid, I read an "Inker's Roundtable" that ran in Comics Scene magazine which greatly influenced me to explore inking and work in that capacity.

BTW, to answer your question about doing my own pencils - I'm currently working on a commission for someone using his own character that I am penciling, inking and coloring. I will post it here when it is complete.

Thanks,
Patrick

Here is the new, all-original commission mentioned in my last post which I both penciled and inked. This is a character named "Detonate" from P.T. Hair's novel "The Appointed Time." I will also be adding watercolor paint and will post again when complete.

I've always thought the logo should have been smooth out on this cover.
Not sure why it is jagged that way.

Still no "After Jack Kirby" note or anything on the cover itself. :/
Can you acknowledge the source?

I'm going to be adding watercolor to this and will also include "after Jack Kirby" on the work as well. I promise that you'll see it when I repost.
