Green Lantern: The New Guardians #11 Review by Jamie Dunst

Tony Bedard: Writer; Tyler Kirkham; Artist; Batt: Inker; Neil Ruffino: Colorist; Dave Sharpe: Letterer; Cover: Tyler Kirkham, Batt & Neil Ruffino

We begin this issue just after the evacuation of the Blue Lantern home world and Saint Walker wanting to get going and pay back Larfleeze for his crimes which Arkillo seems to like.  Once the entire group is present, they head off to Okarra where Larfleeze is wondering where one of his minions are.  When he’s told that he was discorporated on Earth, Larfleeze just makes Glomulus whole again.  Larfleeze has a slight argument when he sniffs out some visitors.

The New Guardians land on Okarra  when they are intercepted by Larfleeze.  We find out that because of the fact that Glomulus is nothing more than a construct, Larfleeze knows everything that he does and then the battle starts in a great two page spread with the New Guardians vs the Orange Lanterns.  Elsewhere, we see Invictus telling his people that they have been corrupted by Larfleeze and must be cleansed.  So what does he do?  He destroys a planet.  I guess that’s one way to do it.  Anyway, Invictus is set on a quest to kill Larfleeze so he can cleanse this system.

Back on Okarra, the battle continues on with the New Guadians fighting the Orange Lantern constructs.  We see Indigo Tribe member Munk trying to attack the Orange Lanterns by channeling the other lanterns but Kyle suggests that he channel the Oragne power and it actually works which gives Kyle the opportunity to try and attack Larfleeze.  However, Larfleeze knocks Kyle down with his lantern and as he’s about to make Kyle one of his new constructs, Glomulus sacrifices himself to protect Kyle.  This angers Kyle and he finally gets a shot in on Larfleeze as the New Guardians fight in honor of Glomulus.  As Larfleeze is getting overwhelmed, we see that Sayd was actually the one responsible for stealing the rings in order to bring the New Guardians together.  As the New Guardians ponder this new development, we see Invictus has arrived.  Looks like we’re in for a good fight next season.

I’m going to start off by saying that I’m glad Kirkham is back on art duties.  I was not a total fan of the art from last issue.  I love the evolution of this team.  I love the idea that we get a team with one Lantern member from each of the different Corps as one unit and when I had heard about this book back when it was first solicited I thought it made a lot of sense.  The writing and the art have been fantastic and I can’t wait to see what happens next.  Great issue.
